Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is a service learning project by BAHS students to create awareness about local hunger and to benefit Broken Arrow Neighbors and BA Food for Kids. Ms. Deal’s 3-D art class along with 4 other art classes from 3 different schools create beautiful bowls and glaze them (also inviting several other classrooms to do projects about hunger through their normal curriculum). For example, World History students have researched hunger throughout world history and created posters of mini-reports and historically accurate bowls to decorate the cafeteria for this event. World History students have created video promos about both world and local hunger. English students have written research papers and created poetry and displays related to what they are reading about hunger and poverty in class.

Each November, they host a simple soup and bread dinner in the BAHS cafeteria where handmade bowls and other student-created projects related to hunger will be displayed. Tickets are sold for the dinner and each ticket holder will receive one of the beautiful bowls created by the art classes. They hope to sell all 500 tickets/bowls.  More information can be found on their Facebook page here.
